Most fans were excited and reassured to hear Jonathan Toews on Wednesday morning when the Chicago Blackhawks captain posted a video on social media explaining why he missed the entire 2021 season.

“I just think there was a lot of things that just kinda pilled up and my body just fell apart, and so what they’re calling it is Chronic Immune Response Syndrome, where I just couldn’t quite recover. My immune system was reacting to everything, to any kind of stress, anything that I would do throughout the day, was always kind of like a stress response.”

Back in December, Toews had announced that he had been “experiencing symptoms that have left me feeling drained and lethargic” and didn’t have a timetable for a return to action.

In the video he posted on social media on Wednesday morning, he explained how frustrated he was to have to take the time to rest and not knowing when he could get back on the ice. He took the time to explain his condition and his hopes to return to action for the 2021-22 campaign. He acknowledged that he kept his condition under wraps, but welcomed all the well wishes.

“I wasn’t too vocal about the things I went through this year and definitely want to thank the fans, my teammates, the organization, [owner] Rocky [Wirtz], [general manager] Stan [Bowman], [head coach] Jeremy [Colliton] - the fans, especially,” Toews said.

While some fans were just happy to hear that Toews was healthy and doing much better, some attacked the Hawks’ captain for the timing of his announcement.

As you know, TSN’s Rick Westhead reported last weeks that “Blackhawks senior management allegedly refused to file a report to Chicago police during the 2010 Stanley Cup playoffs after two players claimed a video coach who worked with the franchise had sexually assaulted them, according to a person familiar with the matter.” According to a lawsuit filed by an unidentified former Blackhawks player, “John Doe,” video coach Brad Aldrich sexually assaulted him and another player during the 2010 Stanley Cup playoff run.

Fans are attacking Toews, saying he made this video to take the heat off his team. However, we have to agree with insider Mark Lazerus of The Athletic that this is Toews’ time and decision to make this personal announcement and fans shouldn’t doubt his decision to do so and how and when he does it.

In 943 games in the NHL, Toews has recorded 345 goals and 470 assists.
