Bad news for the young man.

It was one of the feel good stories of this National Hockey League season, but unfortunately this one is going to be bittersweet for a lot of fans given the latest reports on Ottawa Senators goaltender Joey Daccord.

It now sounds like fans have already seen the last of Daccord this season with Senators insider Bruce Garrioch reporting that Daccord will likely be sidelined for the remainder of the season due to the injury, a high ankle sprain, he suffered on Wednesday night during a matchup against the Vancouver Canucks. It is a terrible turn of events for a young goalie that was rapidly winning over the Senators fan base, but the silver lining here according to Garrioch is that it sounds like he will avoid surgery.

"Daccord is going to be out long-term. He’s out for awhile," confirmed Senators general manager Pierre Dorion as per Garrioch's report.

Daccord made national headlines last weekend when he picked up his first win in the NHL, a win that was quickly followed by an outpouring of emotion from the very happy young man. Daccord, who had only started the game after Senators goaltender Matt Murray suffered an unexpected injury during warmups, was unable to hold back his tears as he was asked just how much his first victory in the big leagues meant to him.

The interview won over scores of hockey fans, including fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs who had been on the wrong end of Daccord's stellar performance on the night, and it seemed like he was destined to ride that wave of momentum moving forward. Although his effort against the Canucks was a losing one, he made 25 saves on the night and once again looked capable backstopping what is admittedly a pretty weak Senators roster.

There's no sugarcoating this one, it is a really sad way to end what was starting to look like something of a cinderella story for Daccord, but hopefully he will get a chance to continue what he started next season. Daccord is currently in the first year of a 3 year deal, so there's at least a chance that fans can expect to see him in the relatively near future.
