Jack Edwards under fire after destroying the Buffalo Sabres.

Harsh but fair.

The Boston Bruins have one of the most infamous in the league calling their games in the form of notorious Bruins voice Jack Edwards. Edwards doesn't even attempt to hide his blatant bias towards the Bruins franchise and no doubt this has played a key role in just how beloved he has become among segments of the Bruins fan base, but it can also rub people outside of that fan base the wrong way at times.

This week was one of those times and Edwards is now facing backlash from members of the Buffalo Sabres fan base and even members of the Sabres media after he made some rather harsh comments about the Sabres during a live National Hockey League broadcast. Generally speaking broadcasters tend to avoid being too critical of opposing teams given that the league is effectively one big partnership, but as you will see in the clip below this did not apply to Edwards this week.

"The NHL's version of a dumpster fire," said Edwards.

Here's the thing, Edwards is not wrong. Although the language he used was harsh and although it clearly angered some members of the Sabres fan base, there's little arguing the fact that the Sabres have been an embarrassment as of late. Sabres insider Mike Harrington was critical of the comments made by Edwards by even he acknowledged that, although harsh, the comments were largely an accurate description of the current state of the Sabres organization.

"The Jack Edwards slam on the Sabres is obviously accurate... But that said, employees of teams and television networks who are rightsholders for a league generally aren't in the business of gratuitous slams of the opposition like that. They're all generally in it together."

Harrington is a member of the media and no doubt his own comments were tempered by that fact. Fans of the Sabres however were far less willing to give Edwards any credit at all.

I don't want to paint all Sabres fans with a single brush however. Although most fans were critical of Edwards and did not appreciate his comments, there were others who felt that the Sabres had no one to blame but themselves for the way that the Bruins announcer talked about them.

Did Edwards go to far? Or should NHL broadcasters be willing to be more critical of teams when things are as bad as they are in Buffalo?
