Is Montreal planning on throwing a wrench into the New York Islanders?
NY Sports Day

The Montreal Canadiens are continuing to regroup after advancing to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1993, though the team that hits the ice in the fall could potentially look considerably different than the team that skated off the Amalie Arena ice in dejection after dropping Game 5 to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Not only has there been a report that recently surfaced regarding the potential for Habs GM Marc Bergevin to tender an offer sheet to young Vancouver Canucks forward Elias Pettersson should the Habs ultimately lose franchise goaltender Carey Price to the expansion Seattle Kraken, but a new report has emerged indicating that Bergevin could also have his eyes on another young player.

Like the Canadiens, the New York Islanders advanced farther than they had in a considerable length of time this past spring, and a major part of it was due to the play of forward Anthony Beauvillier. According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the Canadiens have inquired about the potential of bringing the Quebec native to the bleu, blanc et rouge:

"Hearing the Canadiens have been actively exploring the forward market, looking to add up front. One player they’ve inquired about is Anthony Beauvillier."

Beauvillier scored five goals with eight assists for the Islanders during the Stanley Cup Playoffs that saw them come within one win of the Stanley Cup Final, where they would have faced up against his hometown Canadiens. His overtime goal in Game 6 of Round 3 against the Tampa Bay Lightning gave his team a chance to advance in the subsequent Game 7, though he and the rest of his teammates were held off the scoresheet.

Since being drafted 28th overall in the 2015 NHL Draft by the Islanders, he's gone on to score 81 goals and 74 assists in 331 career games. He's also a pending restricted free-agent when the NHL's free-agency period begins later this month.

He had this to say following the unceremonious end to the Islanders season at the hands of the Lightning:

"Obviously, I want to stay here and have the group stay together. We have this special bond here."

Beauvillier's hometown of Sorel-Tracy isn't far from where the Habs play, and he could help to offset the potential losses that the Habs could be suffering this summer. Could a deal work out for both sides to bring the native home to play for Montreal?
