Some new details are coming out about the tragic death of young hockey player Mack Motzko and, unfortunately for anyone who was affected by the news of Mack's passing, those details have only served to make this situation even more frustrating.

Roughly two weeks ago we reported that Motzko and another young passenger in a vehicle had been killed in a car crash after striking several trees, a crash that had left the much older driver in critical condition. Now according to a report from the Minnesota Star Tribune, it would appear as though the driver, who has since been identified as 51 year old James David Blue, was driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.175 which is more than double the legal limit of 0.08 in Minnesota and on top of that the car was believed to have been traveling nearly 100 miles per hour just prior to the fatal crash.

Mack is of course the son of current University of Minnesota Men's Hockey head coach  Bob Motzko so news of this tragedy spread quickly through the hockey world following the accident. On the Sunday morning following the fatal crash, the University of Minnesota Athletic Department released a brief statement offering their condolences and asking for privacy for the Motzko family.

"We are devastated for Bob, Shelley, their family and all involved," said Gophers athletic director Mark Coyle. "This is an unimaginable tragedy, and we will do everything we can to support those affected. We ask for privacy for the families, as they mourn the loss of loved ones."

In spite of the challenges created by the pandemic last season, Mack continued to develop his skills as a forward on the ice playing 14 games with the Sioux Falls Stampede of the United States Hockey League, putting up 2 points (both assists) over that stretch, as well as 25 games with the New Mexico Ice Wolves of the North America Hockey League where he put up 4 goals and 4 assists for 8 points over that stretch.

Once again our thoughts are with the Motzko family and we hope that they will find some measure of justice here.
