Ilya Mikheyev demands trade out of Toronto!

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman has dropped a bomb. Ilya Mikheyev has reportedly demanded to be traded out of Toronto as the insider revealed that the Russian forward asked to be moved by the Maple Leafs following the 2020-21 season.

However, Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas does not like the idea.

“But, what is important to the story is that the Maple Leafs made it clear they do not want to accommodate this request. With Zach Hyman and Joe Thornton gone from the left wing, the organization told Mikheyev it considers him a key part of their team and are counting on him to have a big year.”

And so, the Maple Leafs declined to accommodate Mikheyev and are hoping he will see how important he is to the roster this season.

But can you imagine how awkward things might be? Per Friedman, neither Dubas nor his agent Dan Milstein were willing to comment.

This also has to be a tough blow for Dubas as a person, he who remained with Mikheyev in a New Jersey hospital when the forward suffered a very serious wrist laceration during his rookie season.

This past year, he had seven goals and 17 points in 2020-21, but went pointless in the playoffs. He remains an important piece for the Leafs as a reliable forward with two-way impact and we understand why Dubas refuses to accept his trade demand.

Mikheyev signed a two-year extension last offseason worth $1.645 million annually… and it looks like he wants out of Toronto now.

WOW!
