Howe family presents Marleau with the stick used in Gordie Howe's final NHL game
San Jose Sharks

Patrick Marleau entered the record books earlier this season when he broke what many believed to be an unbreakable record in the NHL history books. Marleau, of course, passed Hall of Famer Gordie Howe as the NHL's all-time games played record holder with an incredible 1,779 games passing Howe's record of 1,767. Incredible.

Just... I'm honestly still kind of shocked that someone managed to break Howe's record and that Marleau has just quietly gone about his business for over two decades in the NHL now. It's really remarkable when you think about it and to be honest I can't think of a classier player than Marleau to receive the torch from Howe.

Last night in a true "passing of the torch" bit of symbolism, the Howe family presented Marleau with Gordie's NHL game used stick. The stick had been on display in the Hockey Hall of Fame, but will be replaced by the stick used by Marleau in his record breaking game. The Hall of Fame then returned the stick to the Howe family, only to have them pass it along to Marleau as a show of goodwill.

Check it out:

I mean... how cool is that?!?!

Again, Marleau is a classy guy and I'm sure he'll pay homage to Mr. Hockey in his own way with this special gift. Long live Mr. Hockey and long live Patty Marleau! Just two Saskatchewan farm boys who refused to get off the ice at bed time...
