Habs place Gallagher on IR, free up nearly $4 million in cap space ahead of trade deadline

The Montreal Canadiens have placed forward Brendan Gallagher on long-term injury reserve. The plucky forward will miss at least six weeks of action with a broken thumb.

As a result, the Habs now free up $3.75 million in cap space to add a player prior to the NHL trade deadline on Monday.

The team had just over $100,000 in cap space prior to this move and replacing Gallagher will be no easy task, so the extra cap wiggle room should prove to be very valabule for GM Marc Bergevin.
