Bergevin's future a hot topic in Montreal.

The Montreal Canadiens have one of the most rabid fan bases in the National Hockey League, and perhaps even the most rabid of them all, and as a result every player and executive that signs on with that organization is always put under an extra level of scrutiny from both those fans and the media alike.

No stranger to this is Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin who has earned his fair share of detractors and admirers over his tenure within the Canadiens organization, a tenure that now appears to have many questions surrounding it moving forward. Some have been happy with the work Bergevin has done to improve the team, including signing notable free agents in a city where it has often been very difficult to attract free agents both due to the aforementioned levels of scrutiny that come with the job as well as a relatively high tax rate when compared to other cities across the National Hockey League. On the other hand however there is also undeniably a relatively large segment of the Canadiens fan base that would like to see Bergevin replaced, feeling that the general manager has not made sufficient improvements to the team over his long tenure at the helm of the franchise.

On Saturday National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that Habs ownership is in the process of discussing what the future will hold for Bergevin, although Friedman did not provide a great deal of clarity regarding which way the Canadiens might be leaning on this one.

"Teams, especially in Canada, don't really like general managers and coaches going into the final years of their contract and that goes triple when it's Montreal and I believe what's been going on with the Canadiens is Marc Bergevin and the owner Geoff Molson have been talking about the future," said Friedman during his weekly Headlines segment. "How the owner feels and how the general manager feels, if there is an extension what it could potentially look like, just how they both feel about things as he heads into the final year of his contract. So we'll see where those decisions go and where those conversations go, but I think they are underway about the GM's future with the Canadiens."

The fact that his future seems to be up in the air at this stage could be taken as a sign that Bergevin's detractors may finally get what they want, but then again if an extension is being discussed at all it likely means that the Canadiens are at the very least weighing the possibility of keeping Bergevin within the fold for the foreseeable future.

It sounds to me like Friedman was suggesting we will have to wait and see where this one goes, and it could very well be that the Canadiens performance during their upcoming playoff run could play a significant role in what the future holds for Marc Bergevin.
