Goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen goes down with an injury.

The Buffalo Sabres are out of playoff contention, they have had one of the worst seasons in recent memory, superstar forward Jack Eichel has suffered a season ending injury, things couldn't possible get any worse right? Wrong.

On Saturday this season somehow managed to get even worse for the Sabres when their top goaltending prospect in the form of goalie Ukko Pekka Luukkonen suffered a very unfortunate injury while facing off against the Boston Bruins. Unfortunately we don't have a great deal to share in regards to Luukkonen's injury status at this time, the Sabres did take questions following the game but declined to provided an update.

Luukkonen was injured during a relatively routine play when his skate got caught against his own goal post, resulting in his foot and leg getting jammed in between the post and his own body weight. It is unclear where the injury to Luukonen is at this time but he did need to be helped off the ice so that would suggest to me that this could prove to be significant. Obviously we will be hoping for that not to be the case, but it certainly did not look good at the time.

Former National Hockey League goaltender Martin Biron is now a member of the Sabres broadcast and he provided an excellent breakdown of how exactly Luukonen ended up in this situation, speculating that the injury is likely going to be to the 22 year old's leg, knee, or possibly even his hip. It's a really tough break for the young man out of Finland especially considering that he seemingly had a great opportunity to get some NHL experience under his belt, and we hope he gets well soon.

You can hear Biron's break down as well as watch an excellent replay in the video below.
