In case you missed it last night the New York Islanders officially forced a Game 7 in their best of seven, semi final series against the Tampa Bay Lightning with an overtime Game 6 thriller at the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island.

Islanders forward Anthony Beauvillier took advantage of a turnover deep in the Lightning's zone and made no mistake in firing the puck past Lightning netminder Andrei Vasilevsky. It was a picture perfect snipe too, a real highlight reel candidate.

Check it out:

And you know what? It's really too bad that the Islanders faithful had to ruin the moment by showering the players with beer cans, popcorn bags and other types of literal trash.

Watch here how quickly the players get off the ice following Beauvillier's game winner to avoid being pelted with a can of beer:

That's... I... I just don't get it.

Can someone explain to me why fans would do this? Your team just won. This is YOUR team! What are you doing!?

In any case, despite Eddie Olczyk's concern for the players' safety, the players themselves didn't seem to mind the beer can shower.

Check out OT hero Beauvillier's comments on fans who littered the ice:

Teammate Mathew Barzal acknowledged that sure maybe things were a little dangerous, but that's just the way that the Islanders faithful go off. Again, he seemed to have no problems with the practice of littering the ice.

Maybe I'm the crazy one here... but can someone please explain this to me? Is this an Islanders thing? A Long Island thing? I don't remember Isles fans doing this before but to be perfectly blunt it's not like they've had a lot of playoff success since their heyday in the 1980s. So, is this a new thing?
