Friedman finally reveals what’s happening between RNH and the Oilers
Zuma Press

It all started when Edmonton Oilers insider Ryan Rishaug of TSN reported that pending free agent Ryan Nugent-Hopkins could find himself on the trade market if he and Oilers GM Ken Holland can’t come to an agreement ahead of the NHL’s trade deadline on April 12th.

Rumours got louder and louder and sure got to the ears of rival teams who’d love to add RNH to their roster, however, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet revealed in his latest 31 Thoughts column what’s happening between the top forward and the Oilers.

According to him, a trade is not what neither side wants.

“I believe this about Ryan Nugent-Hopkins : He wants to be an Oiler. Edmonton wants to keep him. When you have that foundation, you’re in a good place. The biggest challenge: The economic landscape is recovering slower than everyone hoped.”

However, it might have to come to a trade because of the financial situation, but clearly, both parties are taking their time with this possible extension to make sure they can make it work.

After many discussions during the offseason, talks between the Oilers and Nugent-Hopkins broke off after the season started and have yet to resume. But Friedman feels like it’s because both camps are taking their time to find an agreement.

However, GM Holland will need to be careful with his wallet. RNH isn’t the only asset in the final year of his contract…Defenseman Adam Larsson is in the final year of a six-year, $25 million contract and can also become a UFA this July. It is believed that no talks are currently planned.

The Oilers have just under $25 million in salary cap space next season with Kailer Yamamoto as their only major pending restricted free agent in need of a new contract.

Let’s see how much Nugent-Hopkins wants and if he really prefers to stay in Edmonton, as Friedman reports.
