Duclair fired his agent and turned down multi-year offers only to sign a one year deal. Ouch.

This just in, the Florida Panthers have signed unrestricted free agent forward Anthony Duclair to a one year contract worth $1.7 million.

Check it out:

Duclair had his long-awaited breakout season with the Ottawa Senators last season, putting up 23 goals and 40 points in 66 games. Senators GM Pierre Dorion reportedly tried to negotiate a long-term deal with Duclair, but the 25 year old forward rebuffed. Duclair then elected to fire his representation and do his own negotiations in free agency. How's that workin' out for ya, bud?

To be perfectly frank, Duclair just pissed away the best opportunity he had to get a fat NHL contract. Sure, it's an unpredictable season but he's easily a $3 million to $4 million player with three to four years of term, had he elected to sign earlier this offseason. But, the kind gambled on himself and lost. Here's hoping he puts together an even better campaign in 2021 and he goes out and gets the fat contract he hoped for next offseason.

Ouch...

From the Panthers' perspective though this is a fantastic signing. They have essentially downgraded the winger spot they had with Mike Hoffman in the lineup, but did so with little financial commitment. A solid bit of work by rookie GM Bill Zito.
