Fans in Toronto were devastated when star goalie Frederik Andersen got sidelined with a lower-body in mid-March. But then, Jack Campbell came out, ready to take on the challenge and has done tremendously well in the process.

So much so that insider James Mirtle for The Athletic believes Andersen “ isn’t coming back” to the Maple Leafs’ roster next season.

Unless he can pull a miraculous run in the playoffs, Andersen will be wearing a new uniform for 2021-22.

This could have fans worried about what the Maple Leafs plan on doing to improve their goaltending situation, one that has been an issue for years in Toronto.

Mirtle believes it is possible to get a quality netminder off the market this summer and have the money to pay him:

“Can the Leafs afford to add a high-end tandem goalie? I think so. If you pencil in Zach Hyman at $4.5 million and bring back most of the gang by re-signing Galchenyuk, Thornton, Spezza and Bogosian on cheap contracts, you’re left with around $4.4 million in wiggle room with 19 players on the roster.”

“The Leafs can spend to add a pretty good goalie with Campbell for next year. The debate for them is going to be what’s the best allocation of resources. And can they get an adequate insurance policy for Happy Jack that costs them only $2 million or $3 million?

I think it’s possible.”

And so fans, you ready for a change in between the pipes in TO?
