Former Red Wings defenseman Christian Djoos signs contract in Switzerland

The Detroit Red Wings have already lost forward Mathias Bromé, who is returning home to his native Europe and will soon be suiting up with HC Davos of the Swiss National League. 

And now, joining him in Switzerland is defenseman Christian Djoos. The 26 year old signed a two year deal with EV Zug of the Swiss National League. Technically, the Red Wings can give him a qualifying offer, meaning they'd still retain his professional rights. However, that would expire prior to his newly signed contract in Switzerland. 

“After the departure of Raphael Diaz and Santeri Alatalo, we had to find an equal replacement in defense,” EVZ sports director Reto Kläy said according to a Google-translated press release. “We found this one with Christian Djoos. He is in his prime and will help us with his speed and vision.”

Originally selected by the Washington Capitals in the seventh round (195th overall) of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, he was a member of their 2018 Stanley Cup winning squad that triumphed over the Vegas Golden Knights to bring the nation's capital their first ever title. 

After being assigned to the AHL affiliate Hershey Bears in 2019, Djoos was dealt to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Daniel Sprong. Following the season, he was signed to a one-year contract extension with the Ducks, and was soon placed on waivers following training camp prior to the 2020-21 NHL Season. He would soon be claimed by Detroit Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman. 

In 36 games played with Detroit, Djoos scored twice and also recorded nine assists, along with 14 penalty minutes. 

“I think Christian has done a solid job,” Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill explained earlier in the season. “He’s kind of come as advertised. He’s a really good puck mover. He’s got really good poise with the puck. He’s a little different than what we have in a lot of ways on the back end. We have a lot of guys that are good defenders that are fine with the puck. He’s a really good passer, has good poise.”

Djoos has displayed the capability for providing consistent offense, as he posted 58 points in 66 games with the Hershey Bears in the 2016-17 season. He also put up 32 points in 42 games played in 2019-20 in the AHL.
