All signs are pointing to a big offseason for the Philadelphia Flyers this summer.

The Flyers, of course, absolutely flamed out this past season mostly due to poor goaltending and a porous defensive system. It's clear that this is a team that needs a bit of an overhaul on the back end and... well wouldn't you know it, there are a couple big name defencemen available this offseason.

In his latest 31 Thoughts podcast, Sportsnet NHL insider Elliotte Friedman links the Flyers to both pending free agent Dougie Hamilton of the Carolina Hurricanes and to Seth Jones who has requested a trade away from the Columbus Blue Jackets. It's worth noting that Jones is still signed for an additional season at $5.4 million, but has stated that he will not re-sign an extension with the team and would prefer to explore free agency a year from now.

From Friedman:

To be honest, while Jones may be more difficult to acquire he's a much, much, MUCH better fit for this Flyers team. The marriage of Dougie Hamilton and head coach Alain Vigneault seems like one destined for divorce on day one. Jones though, he seems like a perfect fit for both AV and for the Flyers' identity. He may not have all the offensive upside that Hamilton provides, but he's arguably the more well rounded defenceman and, as mentioned, he'd likely fit into Vigneault's defensive scheme much better than Hamilton would.
