First update on Brandon Carlo since he was taken to hospital last night.

For all of you concerned fans who have been eagerly awaiting an update on Brandon Carlo we've got some good news for you, but unfortunately the details are still quite hazy at this time.

According to an official update from the Boston Bruins, via Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy, we now know that Carlo was kept overnight in hospital following the huge hit he received from Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson. Cassidy told reporters on Saturday morning that Carlo had been released from hospital in the morning, a good sign to be sure but one that also should be a cause for some concern. 

Although I am speculating here, the fact that Carlo was kept in hospital for overnight observation suggests to me that he is likely dealing with a relatively serious concussion. That will come as no surprise to those who saw the hit, but this could mean that the Bruins will be without one of their top defensemen for the foreseeable future. 

Carlo was on the receiving end of a hit that saw his head crushed between the impact of Tom Wilson's body and the protective glass surrounding the boards, and it was clear from the outset that his bell had been rung. Immediately following the hit Carlo could be seen clutching at his head and collapsed to the ice shortly after. He had to be helped off the ice as well, unable to leave under his own power.

Bruce Cassidy informed reporters that he was unable to give reporters any more information on Carlo's condition at this current time, and it may very well be that the Bruins themselves don't have a clear picture of just how serious this situation is going to be for Carlo just yet. That would be another indication, in my opinion, that Carlo could be out long term but we won't know until we get an official announcement from the Bruins in that regard.

It sounds like there is a good chance this will be a costly hit for Tom Wilson as well, with an announcement from the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety that would suggest they are getting ready to throw the book at Wilson.
