Throughout the offseason, it was rumoured that the Toronto Maple Leafs were interested in acquiring defenseman MacKenzie Weegar of the Florida Panthers. We would hear that a deal was getting talked about, but then, different changes came to Toronto and the trade never happened.

On Friday, Sportsnet’s Jeff Marek and Elliotte Friedman explained why the trade fell through between the Maple Leafs and Panthers. Thy revealed on the air of the 31 Thoughts podcast that the Panthers demanded "Travis Dermott and Andreas Johnsson in a deal, Toronto said no.”

Instead, they move Johnsson to the New Jersey Devils for Joey Anderson, who has just played one game with the Maple Leafs this season and failed to record a point.

On top of that, fans are ripping the Leafs apart seeing that some believe Dermott could be lost to the expansion draft for the Seattle Kraken this summer. We never know...

In the meantime, Weegar is doing well in Florida as the Panthers are having an historic start.

Fans are not mincing their words on social media and are criticizing the Maple Leafs for refusing this move. Good thing Toronto is on top of the All-Canadian North division or else, comments would be even worse…
