The Toronto Maple Leafs and Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe have something of a goaltending controversy on their hands.

The team's number one goaltender is still at the time of this writing veteran netminder Frederik Andersen, but as of late there have been some serious questions about whether or not that should remain the case. Andersen has become the subject of much trade speculation and although a trade is still a long shot at this point given the Leafs cap situation, he may still lose his position as the team's #1 goalie.

Career backup Jack Campbell has, despite some injuries this season, made a strong case to take over the net as the #1 for the Leafs and his back to back shutouts have now made that talk very difficult to ignore.

On Sunday veteran National Hockey League analyst Don Cherry, who has always been partial to the Leafs, shared his thoughts on the recent goaltending controversy and made it clear he feels there's really only one direction to go in at this point.

"Campbell was good again last night," said Cherry during his latest podcast.

Cherry actually thought Andersen had been given a raw deal in his last outing after a pair of tip in goals made their way past him, feeling that Andersen didn't really have much of a chance on either play. In spite of that however he acknowledged that the performance from the Leafs' #1 has simply not been good enough.

"He's in a funk" admitted Cherry.

Cherry was then asked if he was either Keefe or Kyle Dubas if he would run with Campbell at this point, and his answer was quite definitive.

"Oh yeah" said Cherry. "Yeah I go with him. You gotta go with him after two shutouts."

Cherry would even go on to add that he's a believer in Andersen, but added that even with that in mind he would start Campbell at this point.

"Well I mean two shutouts in a row, I'm an Andersen guy, but when a guy gets two shutouts in a row...."

The take from Cherry certainly lines up with what we have been seeing from the Maple Leafs faithful on social media, with many calling for the end of the Andersen era in Toronto.
