It certainly was a scary scene yesterday during the NHL Prospects Tournament at Center Ice Arena in Traverse City, MI.

Detroit Red Wings prospect Jared McIsaac was knocked unconscious after a hit from behind from Columbus Blue Jackets prospect James Malatesta. He would be stretchered off the ice and transported to a local hospital for observation, and was soon declared alert with feeling in his extremities.

And according to Detroit's coaching staff, the hit itself looked worse than the reality of the situation.

“Jared took a pretty significant hit in the first period,” prospects coach Ben Simon said Sunday night. “Hit his head on the glass, hit his head on the ice. Lost consciousness for a little bit. Went to the hospital and was evaluated. He’s thankfully doing well — he's moving his arms, moving his legs. He’s coherent, talking. It’s not as bad as it initially looked.”

“It’s rough seeing a teammate go down like that,” 2021 sixth-rounder Pasquale Zito said. “Talking to some of the guys on the coaching staff, I’m hearing he’s doing OK.”

McIsaac, who has extensive experience suiting up on the international stage with Hockey Canada, was selected with the 36th overall pick by the Red Wings in the 2018 NHL Draft.
