Darnell Nurse rushes to hospital for son’s birth after triple OT loss and playoff elimination

What a night for the defenseman…

Talk about a roller-coaster night.

On Monday night, the Edmonton Oilers season came to an end with a triple-overtime loss to the Winnipeg Jets, completing a four-game sweep. Jets forward Kyle Connor scored at 6:52 of triple overtime in Game 4 of the NHL North Division semifinal.

Just like that all players, including defenseman Darnell Nurse, were heading home, defeated.

That’s until he was told he needed to make it to the hospital to get to his fiancé Mikayla, who had been in labour for the past day without her partner.

Finally, Nurse was able to rush to her side and make it in time for the arrival of their first child, a son Aidan, who was born with Daddy in the room.

The Oilers, who were eliminated in the qualifying round by the Chicago Blackhawks last season, have won just one playoff series since reaching the Stanley Cup final in 2006.

Everyone expected the team to make it a long run this time around, thanks star power like Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Nurse. The Jets had also had a difficult end to the regular season, which prompted several fans to see Edmonton win this first-round series.

The Oilers were swept… Winnipeg will face the winner of the other North Division series between Toronto and Montreal. The Maple Leafs took a 2-1 lead earlier Monday with a 2-1 victory. This was the first post-season series between the two teams since 1990, when Edmonton ousted the Jets in seven games in the Smythe Division semifinals.

Nurse gave everything he had to push the series to five games, playing a total ice time of 62 minutes and seconds… We bet he was as exhausted as his dear fiancé once baby Aiden showed up.

We certainly hope mother and baby are well and that Nurse can quickly forget the devastating loss and playoff elimination to focus on his growing family.
