Dan O'Toole unloads on Bell Media after being fired from TSN.

If you're a sports fan north of the border there's a very good chance that you've come across Dan O'Toole and Jay Onrait, better known together as simply Jay and Dan, on a broadcast at some point during your life. I don't think it would be overstating at this point to suggest that the two are something of a Canadian institution, at least they were until earlier this week when O'Toole was blindsided as part of a series of layoffs from Bell Media. 

O'Toole initially made comments that suggested he had been caught completely off guard by the changes, but on Saturday he took those comments to an entirely new level when he began to outright slam his former employer in Bell Media. O'Toole began by calling out the company for what he was clearly implying is blatant hypocrisy when it comes to the 'Bell Lets Talk' movement for mental health.

"Let’s talk. We should. Let’s talk," wrote O'Toole on Twitter. "Does it mean anything without a hashtag? Oh right. Wrong day. So I have to mention the company for it to mean anything? But what if I was fired by the company that makes the hashtag about mental health? Do I still include them in the hashtag?"

O'Toole drew attention to the fact that Bell demands that their company name be included in the hashtag prior to donating money, something that O'Toole claims the company does for self-promotion and not for the benefit of those suffering from mental health issues.

O'Toole then questioned how the way he was dismissed from the company was meant to be a positive on his mental health. Although companies should of course have the right to dismiss their employees, there are rumors that suggest O'Toole was given as little as 24 hours notice after being with the company for an extensive length of time.

I can certainly understand Dan's frustration here and I want to stress that he was not the only person let go, 210 people lost their jobs after Bell Media announced huge layoffs this week. Brendan Halloran, one of the writers for 'Jay and Dan' on TSN ,was also laid off this week and in his case it came just days after he and his newborn child and been featured prominently on the show.

I suspect that a situation like the one that Halloran is experiencing is no doubt also playing a part in O'Toole's obvious frustration at this time.
