Referees in the National Hockey League have been in the spotlight and about a month ago, it was all for the wrong reasons… We all remember how it was announced that referee Tim Peel would not work another game in the NHL after getting caught saying he wanted to give the  Nashville Predators  a penalty in their win over the  Detroit Red Wings.

Peel had been one of the NHL’s most maligned officials, with fans using social media to critique his calls through the years.  However, fans have always enjoyed giving the officials a hard time, but now it’s there is a real issue.

Pierre McGuire has revealed on TSN that the NHL is running out referees and forced to call up officials from the American Hockey League to be linesmen.

This prompted McGuire to suggest a controversial solution, proposing that the NHL could have an “eye in the sky” referee who’d have direct contact with the on ice official. He believes this would prolong careers of referees in the NHL.

Not sure what will be made of this suggestion, however, something will have to be done with the NHL running ouf of officials.

It remains to be seen how the league will fix this and what will be their decision on the use of technology to help referees and linesmen on the ice.

What do you make of McGuire’s suggestion?
