In case you missed the news earlier today, longtime Boston Bruins captain Zdeno Chara absolutely ROCKED the hockey world by announcing that he was leaving the Bruins to sign a free agent contract with the Washington Capitals. The Capitals confirmed the news shortly after.

Check it out:

In a heartfelt letter to Bruins fans Chara admitted that he would have preferred to stay in Boston but that the team was planning to "move forward with their many younger and talented players".

In other words: Chara was pushed out of Boston.

Check it out:

"Recently, the Boston Bruins have informed me that they plan to move forward with their many younger and talented players and I respect their decision. Unfortunately, my time as the proud Captain of the Bruins has come to an end."

Wow... just... wow.

I understand wanting to make room for some fresh blood, but how can you do Big Z like that? The guy has been a consummate professional since arriving in Boston in 2006. Oh... and he captained the team to its first Stanley Cup since 1972. Want your mind blown? Of all the great defencemen the Bruins have ever had... Chara is the only one to captain the team to a Stanley Cup. Raymond Bourque was never able to deliver a Cup to Boston and Bobby Orr was an assistant to Johnny Bucyk during the heyday of the Bruins in the 1970s. Yet... GM Don Sweeney and President Cam Neely just let an icon like Chara walk out the door... pretty incredible when you think about it.
