What is this garbage?!

In case you missed it last night, Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson created absolute mayhem at Madison Square Garden.

The Caps pugilist earned himself a 10 minute misconduct for essentially assaulting New York Rangers forwards Pavel Buchnevich and Artemi Panarin.

Check it out:

For a full recap of what went down, check out our article from earlier today.

As you might imagine, the online reaction to Wilson's attack on Buchnevich and Panarin was not favorable. Hundreds of fans are calling for him to be suspended for the rest of the regular season and playoffs. Others are saying he should never play in the NHL again.

So, what does the Capitals social media team decide to do?

They issue maybe the most brain-dead, tone-deaf Twitter post of all-time.

Check it out:

... what?

What is this nonsense? Your player just assaulted two players much, much, MUCH smaller than him and you cop to "choosing violence" with some 10 year old Internet memes? Garbage. Oh... and of course the Capitals deleted the Tweet as soon as fans jumped all over them.

Like I've said before, I'm a big Tom Wilson fan. I love the way he plays and frankly I wish there were more players like him in the NHL. Does he cross the line? Yes. Should he be punished for that? Also, yes. But I cannot defend his actions last night. Pinning down Buchnevich and body slamming Panarin has nothing to do with the sport of hockey. It's closer to WWE than NHL and it crosses the line for me. I'm not saying that Wilson should never play again, but he obviously deserves a stiff punishment.

I just cannot believe that the Capitals' social media team felt it was appropriate to send out a Tweet like this given the circumstances. As you might imagine, fans absolutely tore them a new one online and they weren't alone as several prominent media members joined alongside them.

I mean... how stupid can you be?

I'm not even kidding when I say that the fire caused by this dumb Tweet could end up factoring into Wilson's suspension. Sure fans were outraged enough to begin with, but then after seeing the support for such a heinous act coming directly from the team's official account... well things went nuclear. It's fitting in 2021 that Wilson is going to get the book thrown at him because of a stupid Tweet... what a world.
