The Montreal Canadiens have taken a stranglehold on their second round series against the Winnipeg Jets in this year's Stanley Cup Playoffs, but their big win in Game 4 may have also come with a pretty big price tag.

Following the conclusion of the game's second period the Canadiens announced that veteran defenseman Jeff Petry would not return to the game after he suffered an "upper body injury," something that left many fans confused given that he did not appear to be involved in any particularly violent collisions on the ice prior to being injured.

What we know now however is that Petry appears to have been injured in what can only be described as a freak accident, one that unfortunately could hurt the Canadiens in these playoffs if he does prove to be out for any length of time. Petry was playing the puck along the boards when he was given a very minor bump by veteran Winnipeg Jets forward Paul Stastny, one that seemed to barely phase Petry at all. What it did do however was push Petry ever so slightly closer to the boards and this is what led to the freak injury.

As you will see in the short, slow motion replay below, Petry's hand appears to get caught in one of the many holes in the glass that are used by photographers and cameramen to capture the game in all of its beauty. Although we do not know for certain that this is where Petry was injured, it does appear to have been the play on which he was hurt and this does appear to be the only thing that could have potentially caused the injury.

Here's the replay:

If you look closely it appears as though one of his fingers goes right into the hole as he skates by and gets caught there, likely being pinned there and tugged on by the full force of his forward momentum. It's easy to see how this could have seriously damaged his finger, and we will now have to await an update from the Canadiens in order to learn the extent of the injury that he may have caused himself.
