Bruins’ McAvoy “won’t sign for less than $10 million a year”

It all started with Cale Makar signing a six-year contract through the 2026-27 season with the Colorado Avalanche, at an average annual value of $9 million.

Then, it was confirmed that Seth Jones would cash in $9.5 million annually over the next eight years with the Chicago Blackhawks.

There was Dougie Hamilton signing a seven-year, $63 million with the New Jersey Devils as a free agent and then, wowser, the Columbus Blue Jackets signed star defenceman Zach Werenski to a six-year contract extension carrying an average annual value of $9.583 million.

The defensemen are cashing in big time in the NHL!

This prompted insider Arpon Basu of The Athletic to suggest that there is no way Charlie McAvoy of the Boston Bruins won’t do the same or even better when it’s time to re-sign.

Basu believes that there is no way that McAvoy, who is a restricted free agent with arbitration rights next offseason will be “signing for less than $10 million a year at this point.”

There is no doubt that Charlie is going to be in for a sizeable raise on his next contract following the upcoming 2021-22 regular season.

The 23-year-old defenseman finished with a top-5 finish in Norris Trophy voting this season after tallying five goals and 30 points in 51 games for the Bruins, On top of that, he averaged about 24 minutes of ice time per game during the regular season, his first without veteran Zdeno Chara giving him a hand.

Then McAvoy managed to put up 12 points in 11 playoff games along with 26:39 of ice time. Without enough defensive help around him against the New York Islanders, he was arguably the best player for the Bruins during the postseason.

A bump in salary is coming for him!

But $10 million a season? Can it be true?
