Bruins make two cuts to their training camp roster.

The Boston Bruins have trimmed down their training camp roster ever so slightly, although neither move will come as a surprise.

On Sunday morning the Bruins officially announced that 18 year old forward Ryan Mast would be returning to the Ontario Hockey League, where he currently plays for the Sarnia String, after a brief stint in a National Hockey League training camp. Mast, who was the Bruins sixth round draft choice (181st overall) at the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, will now enter his second season with the Sting. Unfortunately what would have been his second season was cancelled when the OHL shut down as a result of the Covid pandemic, something that no doubt has had a significant impact on his development. In his one previous season, during the 2019 - 2020 season, he had 1 goal and 10 assists or 11 points in 58 games with the Sting.

On the very same day the Bruins also announced that 18 year old defenseman Noah Dorey had also been cut from training camp. Like Mast, Dorey will also be returning to Canada where he will continue to play in the Western Hockey League. For the past 3 seasons Dorey has been a member of the Kelowna Rockets, having most recently played 9 games for that organization during the 2020 - 2021 season. Over that stretch he had 1 goal and 2 assists for a total of 3 points, and he finished the season with a plus minus rating of +3.

There was also one more change made to the Bruins roster on Sunday, although at the time of this writing the reason for that move remains unclear.  Samuel Asselin, whom the Bruins signed to a 2 year contract just earlier this summer, was replaced on the traveling roster. The 23 year old centerman will be replaced by another 23 year old centerman in Ian McKinnon but thus far we have seen no explanation given for the move. It could simply be that the team is looking to play Asselin alongside their regulars, something that is within the realm of possibility given that he has earned an NHL contract from the Bruins, but that is only speculation on my part at this time.
