Brendan Smith hints at new details about the Tom Wilson incident.

Washington Capitals enforcer Tom Wilson has never been one to shy away from controversy during his career in the National Hockey League, but during the 2020 - 2021 regular season Wilson was involved in an incident that brought more negative publicity down on him than ever before in the past.

I'm of course referring to the now infamous scuffle between Wilson and New York Rangers forward Artemi Panarin and Pavel Buchnevich, one that would lead to calls for Wilson's head from certain segments of the NHL fan base. If you've just awoken from a year long coma or if you were somehow living under a rock at the time of the incident, here's what went down:

Wilson would of course walk away from the incident scott free, while the Rangers on the other hand saw massive front office changes off the back of the incident and would go on to be involved in two line brawls in two different games with Washington following the incident as well. Perhaps the only consequence you could argue Wilson may have suffered is some minor damage to his reputation.

According to Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Brendan Smith, who was with the Rangers at the time and fought Wilson following the incident, we may not have heard the last about this incident however with Smith hinting that there may be some more juicy behind the scenes details that have yet to make their way out to the public. Speaking during a recent episode of SiriusXM Radio's Hockey Today, Smith revealed that he might have more to say once his career is over.

"Once my career is over there will be more information that will come to fruition about the whole incident, but all I can say at the moment is that I personally wish the league would have handled it a little bit differently," said Smith. "I think that we have to take care of our superstars 100% and it wouldn't have hit the fan like it did."

If you're thinking based on these comments that Smith is arguing that players shouldn't be physical you could not be more mistaken. The former Rangers defenseman went out of his way to commend both his former teammates on the Rangers and even the players on the Capitals roster for all standing by their teammates.

"The one thing that I love about hockey is that guys stand up for each other," he added.

Smith clearly believes that the brotherhood created by the sport of hockey is second to none, and we agree.
