Boston Bruins draft pick Fabian Lysell likely headed for Vancouver (WHL)

The Boston Bruins selected Fabian Lysell with the 21st overall selection in this year's NHL Draft, and it sounds like rather than continuing to play with Luleå HF in the Swedish Hockey League, he'll be taking the next step in his career in North America. 

Bruins GM Don Sweeney announced that it's imperative for Lysell to continue his development by facing opponents in "his peer group", and that would be the Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League. And it certainly will be a good transition for the 18 year old, who stands at 5'11 and 172-pounds. 

“It will be important for him to play against kids in his peer group. We’re excited that he’s going to play over here [in Vancouver],” said Don Sweeney. “We do believe the transition to the smaller ice surface, especially with young guys, they have to play in the hard areas of the ice in order to be successful. He’s more than willing to do that, but he’s got to find his space.”

Team management has gotten a glimpse of his skills during the Boston Bruins rookie camp, during which Lysell picked up several assists and proved that he doesn't shy away from physical contact despite his shorter stature. 

“Really any open ice, he’s able to create offensively,”  Sweeney said. “He’s got some areas in traffic and things he’s got to be aware of, and defensively — all things we believe we can teach young players, as long as they’re willing to learn. But he’s got the skillset that’s pretty unique to be adding to our group, and to be excited about. It’ll be important to play against his peer group. We’re excited he’s going to play over here.”

The Göteborg, Sweden native has represented his homeland on the international stage, appearing for Team Sweden at the 2020 Under-17 World Hockey Championship as well as the Under-18 team at the 2021 Under-18 World Junior Championship, helping them win a bronze medal.
