The Chicago Blackhawks took to Twitter later Tuesday night to let fans know to be on the lookout for a move.

Moments later, it was confirmed that the Hawks have traded Brent Seabrook’s contract to the Tampa Bay Lightning in return for forward Tyler Johnson and a second round pick in 2023.

Seabrook will be immediately placed on the Lightning’s long term injured reserve. There is no salary retained in the transaction.

This has been a busy, but quite successful day for the Blackhawks. They managed to acquire goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, and now Johnson and a second round pick for pretty much nothing, though multiple reports indicate Fleury is mulling his future.

As for the Lightning, the team has now managed to create some cap space (about $1.8 million) by moving Johnson. Yes, GM Julien BriseBois has done it again.

The Bolts had tried to move Johnson and his $5-million cap hit ahead of the 2021 season as they needed to make room on the flattened salary cap. Hw went unclaimed on waivers during the last free agency period and followed it up with 22 points in 55 games. Johnson is a two-time 50-point scorer, but with the Lightning's deep lineup and cap issues, rumours were loud that he would be moved. This is the end of a nine-year run for Johnson in Tampa Bay.

The two-time Stanley Cup champion will be a great addition up front in Chicago. Last season, he scored eight goals and added 14 assists in 55 games for the Bolts during the regular season last year, adding four goals and three assists in 23 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

As for Seabrook already, he had retired from competitive play this season due to injuries, but his contract still had three years left on his eight-year deal worth $6.875-million per season. His deal will now be buried in Tampa Bay to help create some cap relief.

This seems like a happy trade for both sides.
