Boston Bruins new captain Patrice Bergeron wants to use his leadership to good use off the ice.

When meeting with former UMass-Amherst star and San Jose Sharks forward Mario Ferraro, former Boston Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference, former NHL goaltender Mike Richter, and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Michael Regan, Bergeron joined a roundtable discussion on the importance of taking action to protect access to clean air and water and reducing the devastating effects of climate change.

He does not want to just shut and play anymore. He wants to make sure he is part of the solution. That’s why the Bruins’ veteran leader is getting involved with the #NHLGreen initiative.

‘For me and my family, it’s a growing awareness, it’s grown, obviously for my kids and I want them live a beautiful life like I did, and same with their grandkids,” the Boston Bruins captain said. “You see that report from United Nations and you do realize like ‘you know what? I really have to step it up and find ways to lead and to make those changes not only for myself but also for my kids and their futures’. So I think it really confirmed that not only is it the right thing to do, but that we need to make some changes and be part of the solution. I think we all have connections to nature and to the environment, whether it’s hunting, fishing, hiking, and don’t we want to preserve that?”

When he made the announcement of his involvement in the green initiative, some fans attacked him. But you have to imagine Bergeron has heard worse on the ice.

Bergeron looks to raise awareness for important social and environmental causes, but ignorant trolls went after Bergeron and the panel once the announcement was made public.

But Bergeron refuses to shut up and just play hockey. He wants to make a difference and by the way we can see him do so in the Bruins’ dressing room and on the ice, we should feel lucky to have him working hard for this great cause.

We all know Bergeron can play and be loud about something that matters so much like the planet’s health. You go, Bergy!
