It is a new start of forward Anthony Duclair, but it is also one that might come with regrets. The Florida Panthers have signed him to a one-year deal, worth $1.7 million. He was on the free-agent market for months when he decided to test the waters after the Ottawa Senators had attempted to keep him on their roster. An agreement couldn’t be reached with the 25-year-old, who is representing himself.

That now sounds like a huge mistake, especially since team insider Brent Wallace revealed on the air of Ottawa’s TSN 1200 that the offer that Duclair turned down from the Senators was for three years and for the total amount of $12.75 millions, for an average annual value of $4.25 million.

It sure looks like Duclair has cost himself $10 million by firing his agent…

When he first became an unrestricted free agent, Duclair was reportedly seeking $5 million per year, which seemed like a lot for the type of inconsistent player he has shown to be. Clearly the Panthers knew that.

We could understand that Duclair was hoping to cash in on his latest performances, he who reached the 40-point mark for the second time in his career last season while scoring a career-high 23 goals. He earned $1.65 million on a one-year contract and is now making just over that. It might not have been the best to represent himself on the market…

Most teams have been aware that Duclair can be quite inconsistent and has often be called out for his attitude off the ice. His work ethic has always been criticized since the day he was drafted, which is why he fell to pick No. 80 in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

This might have played in negotiations with different teams, before he settled with the Panthers. For a lot less money the Senators first offered him months ago…
