The Ottawa Senators signaled early on that they would be sellers at the trade deadline and now they have sent one of their veteran defensemen to the Boston Bruins.

According to an official announcement from the Senators organization, 27 year old defenseman Mike Reilly has been shipped off to Boston where he will join the ranks of the Boston Bruins. In exchange for trading Reilly to Boston, the Senators will receive a third round draft pick at the 2022 National Hockey League entry draft.

The Bruins have been decimated by injuries to their blue line so it comes as no surprise to see them making this move, and frankly the only surprise here is just how quiet the Bruins have been leading up to the deadline when you consider they were once again expected to be a serious playoff contender this season. There have been rumblings that general manager Don Sweeney has had his hands tied as a result of financial concerns from ownership, and acquiring a defenseman who makes just $1.5 million on an expiring contract would seemingly fit that narrative.

The Bruins will be getting a capable defenseman in Reilly who has had himself a pretty good season in spite of playing on a relatively bad team. Over the course of 40 games in the regular season he has no goals and 19 assists for a total of 19 points and currently boasts a plus minus rating of +2, again on a team with a losing record.

No doubt Bruins fans are hoping to see more from their organization ahead of the upcoming Stanley Cup playoffs, but at least this is something.

There have been two other trades in the last few minutes as well if you're interested in checking them out you can find the links here:

The Calgary Flames trade goaltender David Rittich to the Maple Leafs.

The Los Angeles Kings trade forward Jeff Carter to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
