More details on the Auston Matthews injury.

The Toronto Maple Leafs where without their top star on Saturday night and as you would expect in a circumstance of that nature it was a cause for concern for the diehard fans in the Toronto market. 

Thankfully there was some good news that filtered out during the Saturday night matchup between the Leafs and the Edmonton Oilers, information that came courtesy of National Hockey League insider Chris Johnston on his weekly Headlines segment. Johnston indicated that this was not a serious problem for the Leafs forward, and even hinted quite strongly at the fact that Matthews could very well have been in the lineup had circumstances been different. 

"I think the most important piece of news if you're the Toronto Maple Leafs is that this does not seem to be a situation that is any cause for real alarm," said Johnston. "Auston Matthews has been dealing with a wrist injury throughout this season and it was something he re-aggravated in the game against Calgary earlier this week but he was on the ice at Rogers Place this morning testing things out and I think the decision to keep him out of tonight's game was really situational. If this isn't a first place team and this isn't the start of a road trip with 5 games in 8 days then perhaps he is playing in this one. I suspect we will see Auston back in the lineup quite soon."

This would appear to line up with comments made by Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe earlier in the week in which he hinted that Matthews had been dealing with a wrist issue during the season. Obviously the fact that this injury does not appear to be serious and appears unlikely to keep Matthews out of the lineup for much longer is pretty much a best case scenario for the Leafs. 

Matthews has unquestionably been one of the most dominant players in the National Hockey League this season with a staggering level of production. In spite of having appeared in just 20 games for the Leafs thus far he currently sits at 18 goals and 13 assists for an insane 31 points over that stretch of play.
