Leafs, Flames, Red Wings, and Sharks all waive players on Sunday.

Some decent names up for grabs.

The abundance of waiver activity that we have seen early on in this somewhat abnormal National Hockey League regular season has been really interesting to watch unfold, and that trend continued on Sunday as a number of players once again found their way onto the waiver wire.

The Toronto Maple Leafs made arguably the biggest splash of the day when they moved both forward Jason Spezza and Aaron Dell to waivers, a move that was no doubt a reaction to the injury to Leafs forward Nick Robertson on Saturday night. We already covered how that injury could negatively impact the Leafs, and with both Spezza and Dell heading to waivers it seems very likely that the Leafs will be losing at least 1 more player over the weekend.

Although Dell is coming off of two relatively poor seasons with the San Jose Sharks the fact that every team needs to carry 3 goalies this season has put even goalies like Dell in high demand. The odds of him making it through waivers I would estimate are hovering somewhere around 0%, with teams in desperate need of an additional goaltender out there like the Edmonton Oilers.

The Leafs were not the only team to put their players up for grabs however, with the Calgary Flames, San Jose Sharks and Detroit Red Wings all making moves of their own. In the case of Calgary it will be the recently signed Brett Ritchie heading to waivers, the Sharks will be placing Joel Kellman on waivers, and for the Red Wings it will be Alex Biega who hits the waiver wire. All 3 men are useful players in their own right, however I think it is much less likely that any of these players will be claimed.

A team looking for depth on defense could potentially take a look at Biega but I suspect it will be the 2 Leafs who run the highest risk of being claimed by tomorrow at noon. Dell is as good as gone already in my estimation and, of the 3 forwards available today, Spezza has the most offensive upside while also being on an incredibly team friendly type of contract.

Could be a rough weekend for the Maple Leafs roster depth.
